Four River Shannon Crossing types were identified and short listed down to a Low Level
Opening Bridge and a Tunnel Type for further consideration. The Low Level Closed
Bridge and High Level Bridge Types were eliminated earlier.
The two Crossing Types were then assessed on Environmental, Engineering and Economic
grounds and a twin box Tunnel Crossing Type was recommended by the Consultants.
The main reason for making this recommendation is that the Tunnel reduces visual
intrusion in the landscape. It also eliminates potential conflict between Road
and River users which would have occurred due to the opening of the Low Level
Opening Bridge to facilitate shipping movements.
